Introduction to Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty

The following video provides an in-depth overview of Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty.

Microsoft approach to sovereignty

Microsoft public cloud extends the amount of control that it can deliver in the hyperscale cloud by using sovereign controls through Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty. Microsoft Cloud offers sovereign capabilities that support enhanced control without trading the cloud value.

The following image illustrates the y axis, which represents the cloud value, namely scalability, innovation, cybersecurity, reliability, cost savings, agility, and redundancy. The x axis depicts the controls, namely sovereignty, residency, and operational transparency of the workloads and how Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty helps you to be as high on the y axis as possible.

The hyperscale cloud can deliver a range of control while providing desirable cloud value. Disconnected services and on-premises private clouds deliver more control but at the cost of a tremendous drop in cloud value. The tradeoff exists on an underlying curve where you can preserve cloud value only up to a certain point of control. Beyond that point of control, the cloud value diminishes rapidly.

Currently, public cloud controls and capabilities for building sovereign solutions are available. Microsoft partners can immediately get public sector customers started on their digital transformation, but it's a difficult problem to solve.

Microsoft provides a cloud solution that helps address specific and unique needs of government customers regarding what they want from the cloud, such as:

  • Hyperscale capabilities that provide the latest innovations to help change how governments operate.

  • Advanced sovereign controls provide an extra layer of protection to help customers support local policies and regulatory requirements.

  • World-class cybersecurity that can detect, respond to, and deter cyberattacks early by using unmatched resources and scale while taking advantage of the latest security capabilities.

Introduction to Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty

Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty is a solution that enables public sector organizations deploy workloads in Microsoft Cloud while helping meet their specific sovereignty, compliance, security, and policy requirements. Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty helps create software boundaries in the cloud to establish extra protection that public sector organizations require, including the use of hardware-based confidentiality and encryption controls.

Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty provides tools, guidance, and guardrails for public cloud adoption. It includes appropriate sovereign controls to help extend the amount of control while unlocking the value and capabilities of hyperscale in Microsoft Cloud.

Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty helps address the sovereignty needs of public sector organizations. It's customizable and helps customers adhere to evolving local policies and regulatory requirements around the handling of data. Public sector organizations don't need to choose between digital innovation and control over their data and digital workloads. They can implement more secure, consistent, and compliant environments and support evolving local regulations while taking full advantage of the cloud. The benefits and value of running your applications in the Microsoft Azure public cloud are substantial and include scalability, elasticity, resiliency, compliance, agility, and unmatched cybersecurity. Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty can help customers meet their digital sovereignty and compliance requirements while still gaining benefits of the public cloud.

Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty aims to simplify, standardize, and improve confidence in the digital sovereignty of the public cloud by providing tools and guidance throughout the cloud implementation life cycle for IT professionals, information security officers, and decision makers. Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty supports greenfield scenarios, such as migration of on-premises workloads to the cloud, and brownfield implementations, such as aiming to improve the digital sovereignty and compliance of existing cloud workloads.
