Removing virtual switches (1Gb) from hosts in the HYPER-V cluster and adding new virtual switches (25Gb) - query about consequences

Hello.

I will be changing network cards in my hyper-v cluster (the hyper-v cluster consists of 4 physical hosts with 1Gb network cards). The operating system installed on the physical hosts is Windows server 2019 Datacenter. We have over 100 virtual machines on the cluster and each of these virtual machines has an assigned virtual switch (we have two virtual switches(1Gb network) , one switch for test servers and the other switch for production servers).

When installing new 25Gb network cards in physical hosts, I want to perform the following actions:

  • remove the existing network configuration created from 1Gb network cards ( remove virtual switches and remove the existing teaming of 1Gb cards )

Then, I want to perform the following actions on each host in turn:

  • create a new teaming of 25Gb cards for the production network
  • create a new teaming of 25Gb cards for the test network
  • create a new virtual switch for the production network (the vswitch name will be the same as before)
  • create a new virtual switch for the test network (the vswitch name will be the same as before).

These actions will be performed on each host that will be temporarily disconnected from the hyper-v cluster

Will it now be the case that when a host with new cards is added to the hyper-v cluster, the network card will be automatically assigned to the virtual machine the same as before when performing a live migration?

Won't the virtual machine lose its network configuration at this point? Because I can't imagine having to reconfigure the network on each virtual machine after changing the virtual switch.

Thank you for helping to answer my questions.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

As long as the virtual switch name is same, the network configuration will be maintained when you replace the network cards or virtual switches.

To avoid any risk, you can backup the network configuration and do a UAT test in UAT environment.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best regards,

    Jill Zhou
