Turn Off Microsoft Authenticator for File Sharing with External Recipients - OneDrive

Hi all,

I use OneDrive to share files with an enterprise customer of mine via OneDrive. My organisation has security authentication turned on, and the recipients I shared files with used to be able to authenticate by selecting to receive mobile or email verification code, entering it, which would allow to them to access and download the file.

Now, OneDrive has changed to force the recipient to download authenticator. Given the nature of the environment the customer is in - 8 times out of 10 this is not an option. Causing delays and manual workarounds to get the files to them. I spoke to my IT administrator who advised the only option is to share each individual email to them so they can switch off MFA in the backend for this recipient - however the customer is large and I share files with hundreds of different recipients (usually new recipients) so this isn't really an option that's viable.

Note given the file types and sizes I can't simply attach them to email. What are some options?

  1. Can my admin team switch off MFA by domain email (e.g. for all recipients with @company.com.au email)
  2. Can MFA be switched off for OneDrive files sent from my account only?
  3. Is there any other workaround apart from using another provider (e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive)

Thanks in advance :)
