We have not been able to create new backup vaults for MySQL flexible server for a while.

The documentation has been updated with a note:

The preview solution for protection of Azure Database for MySQL flexible servers by using Azure Backup is currently paused. Please refrain from configuring any new backups until further notice. Be assured, all existing backup data is safe and available for restore.

Can anyone provide any insight into backups being 'paused', or when the functionality will be resumed?

    @Mark
    Thank you for the question and for using Microsoft Q&A platform.
    I understand that you are looking for information regarding the pause on creating new backup vaults for MySQL flexible server.

    The pause on the preview solution for protecting Azure Database for MySQL flexible servers using Azure Backup is due to ongoing improvements and updates being made by the Azure team. This pause means that you cannot configure any new backups at the moment, but all existing backup data remains safe and available for restore.

    Unfortunately, there is no information available on when the functionality will be resumed. I suggest keeping an eye on the Azure Backup documentation for any updates on this matter.

    For anyone else who stumbles across this, support for Azure Backup for Azure Database for MySQL has been stopped until further notice (no timescale available).

    This is "due to a critical bug that affects the restorability of backups".

    Due to this bug, beginning on 1 February 2025, backups already configured and scheduled for existing MySQL – flexible server workloads will be paused.

    This means any existing Azure Backup for MySQL Fleixble Server configurations will also stop working.

    The recommended workaround is to take backups manually and store them in an Azure Storage file share.
