Hi,

I was going to add an study account and I have already went to the step of scanning the QR code. However, at that moment, my phone turned off and I recharged it. I tried to rescan the QR code , but the code became invalid. When I try to generate the QR code it asks me to enter the number on my authenticator app, but I didn't even add my account successfull.

I have tried to reinstall the app to re add the account but failed. I even tried to regenerate the QR code by logging into the security page, but it still asks me to enter the code on the app.

It seems that I pre-add the account in the authenticator app, what should I do now to fix the issue?

    Hello @Wei Xu ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

I understand that you're facing an issue while registering for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using the Microsoft Authenticator app. Specifically, the QR code became invalid when you tried to rescan it, and now the app is asking you to enter a number that you can't provide because the account was never successfully added.
To resolve this, your account's MFA settings need to be reset. This action can only be performed by a Global Administrator (GA) in your organization.

Steps for the Global Administrator to enable a disabled user account:

    • Sign in to the Azure portal.
    • In the left menu, select Azure Active Directory > Users > All users.
    • Choose your account, then select Authentication methods.
    • Click Require re-registration for MFA to reset the MFA settings for your account.

    Reference: Manage user authentication options.

Once the Global Administrator has reset your MFA, you should be able to proceed with registering the Microsoft Authenticator app successfully.
