How Up-to-Date is the data returned by the PointsOfInterest Data Source?

Hi,

Regarding the public data sources referenced by the Bing Spatial Data Services page (https://zcusa.951200.xyz/en-us/bingmaps/spatial-data-services/), how up-to-date is the data that is returned by the PointsOfInterest data source (i.e., https://zcusa.951200.xyz/en-us/bingmaps/spatial-data-services/public-data-sources/pointsofinterest)? I have not found anything online that references when the data was last updated. There is a lot of data that is very inaccurate and out of data (e.g., business locations that no longer exist, very old and current locations of the same business, businesses that have opened in the last five years that do not exist). Has it been abandoned or are there plans to update it periodically?

Hi Ken,

I have reached out to our Spatial Data Services team to ask the cadence rate for SDS POI refresh. We do get this data from Tomtom so if you do find a business that is out of business please do report it through Bing.com/maps.

HI,

Honestly, I'd be surprised if this data source has been updated in the last half dozen years. There were so many business locations that were so out-of-date or non-existent just in the area that I know and live, that I ended up abandoning the use of the PointsOfInterest public data source.

I am now using the Bing Maps Locations API (https://zcusa.951200.xyz/en-us/bingmaps/rest-services/locations/) instead, which is much, much more accurate in terms of current businesses and their locations.

I am glad to hear the Location API for Businesses is working for you. I assume you are using Local Search and are OK with results that are US Only?

Hi,

Yes, I am using the Local Search. Its limitations of 25 max results (vs 250) and US only is not ideal (my users cover Canada as well). The Local Search page does mention that "Presently, the Local Search API supports business entities only in the US." Do you know if there are any plans to expand its coverage?

Hi Ken,

No plans to expand coverage due to a number of issues. My understanding is that the data is updated weekly. You could try our other product Azure Maps and see if it has a better result option for you.

Unfortunately, I've given up on the Local Search API as well because it's metered response may or may not return all results for an area (up to the API's max results of 25) (see https://zcusa.951200.xyz/en-us/answers/questions/1299039/bing-maps-local-search-api-more-locations-are-retu).

Overture just announced a POI data source. If an open option would work for you, that might be worth looking into for you.
