RDS behind Azure Web App Proxy works through browser but not when RDP file downloaded

Followed this Microsoft guide to protect the RDwebclient we setup on windows 2022 with azure application proxy: https://zcusa.951200.xyz/en-us/entra/identity/app-proxy/application-proxy-integrate-with-remote-desktop-services

This is working perfectly when using the RDwebclient and starting the connection in the browser. But when downloading the RDP file we get an error upon connecting: "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because authentication to the firewall failed due to missing credentials"

Drawback: Not able to use Multiple Monitors

    Hi @Amandala_admin

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A.

I understand that you are issue is not solved.

Please ensure that the settings populated within the RDP file are correct and when trying with HTML5.

Verify whether you Allow access to these URLs?

Can you ensure that TLS 1.2 is enabled?

Do you have the RDS ActiveX add-on installed and enabled if using Internet Explorer or Edge IE Mode

When you published you published your RD host endpoint can you make sure these settings are correct within your configuration(s)?

We have been searching for a way to get this working for some time to. As we need to redirect smartcards.

I think it's because the RD file, doesn't go via the app proxy, so that's why. But i'm hoping theres a fix soon, or smartcard redirection appears in the HTML5 browser one day.

Changing it from Entra to passthrough might work, but then you loose MFA which is rather important.
