How to change SystemFamily in System/HardwareConfig Regedit

Thank you for the response. I've done this procedure. The issue is the results revert back when I restart. I've ran regedit as admin, I've attempted to change permissions.

I am thinking these values can't be changed because the actual registry file is in use. I've attempted to open and copy the registry file, but I get the "can't not make changes because it is in use".

A possibility is that you are editing volatile registry data. A volatile registry key (and its values) exists only in memory and is discarded when a system restarts so any changes made are not persisted.

One way to see if you are working with a volatile registry key (HKLM\SYSTEM\HardwareConfig\Current) is to attempt to create a subkey using regedit.exe or the command line reg.exe program. Naturally the test should be performed when running as Administrator. These programs only create non-volatile keys. An attempt to create a non-volatile subkey under a volatile key will fail and an error message will be issued.

Thanks for the follow up. I can add a subkey to

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\HardwareConfig\Current

and it persists. However, I cannot modify an existing key.

I am wondering if I can change this file if I were to remove the drive and access it while it wasn't being used as the boot drive.
