Stuck on Setting up your device for work

I am having a problem with one of our devices getting stuck and then error-ing out just after signing in. The device had its motherboard replaced and after that it was we would get an error (8018000a) message saying Something went wrong. The device is already enrolled.

Checking Entra I saw that there were 2 entries for that device. One was Entra joined and the other was Intune joined. I delete the Intune joined entry but left the Entra Joined listing. I could not delete the Entra Join device entry. I also saw that there was a duplicate entry in Autopilot, which I also removed. I then did a sync.

After that, I tried logging in again to the machine, but now it is stuck on "Setting up your device for work" After about an hour it again errors out and say contact your administrator.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

It sounds like you're encountering a challenging issue with a device getting stuck on "Setting up your device for work" after a motherboard replacement. Here are some steps to help troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Reset This PC: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select Reset this PC.

Registry Cleanup: Open regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Enrollments, and delete old enrollment entries.

Check Enrollment Status: Run dsregcmd /status in an elevated Command Prompt to verify the device's enrollment status.

Re-Enroll Device: Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, disconnect the work account, restart the device, and re-enroll it.

Verify Autopilot Configuration: Ensure there are no duplicate entries in the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center.

If the issue persists, it's advisable to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

@Schumacher, Craig, Thanks for posting in Q&A.

For error (8018000a) message, we can try to delete all GUIDs under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Enrollments to see if it can be enrolled.

Note: Make sure to NOT delete Context, Ownership, Status and ValidNodePaths.

And for stucking on "Setting up your device for work", it is suggested that you delete all device records in Microsoft Intune and Entra portal and create a new Autopilot deployment profile to re-enroll. If the error comes again, please share with us the screenshot of error message.
