Change Recovery Vault from Geo-reduntant to Locally-redundant

My nonprofit uses a Recovery Services vault for Data Protection Manager online backups.

When we first set this up, Microsoft was offering a $5,000 annual grant for Azure services, which we apply towards the vault.  At the time we set it up as Geo-redundant, which the grant easily covered.

When the grant was cut to $3,500, we were still OK with this, but now that the grant has been cut once again to $2,000 it no longer covers the expenses.  In 2024 the grant ran out for us over the summer, and we ended up having to pay a over $1,000 dollars until the grant renewed.

In order to avoid incurring that expense again, we would like to change the setup from Geo-redundant to Locally-redundant.

Is there any way to do that without losing the years worth of backups we have, or do we need to delete everything and configure a new storage vault?

Thanks for your help,

    Hi Ralph Smith ,

Greetings & Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum! Thanks for posting your query!

I understand your concern about managing costs while ensuring your backups are safe. Unfortunately, once a Recovery Services vault is set up with a specific redundancy option (like Geo-redundant), it cannot be changed without losing the existing backups.

To switch from Geo-redundant to Locally- redundant storage, you would need to create a new Recovery Services vault with Locally - redundant storage and then migrate your backups to the new vault

I Suggest few steps you can follow to make this transition while preserving your backups:

Disable Soft Delete on the Existing Vault:

    • In the Azure portal, search for Recovery Services vaults.
    • Select the vault you wish to work with.
    • Go to Properties > Security Settings.
    • In the Soft Delete section, select Disabled and save the changes.

    Disable Backups for Existing VMs:

    • Navigate to the Backup section in the Azure portal.
    • For each resource being backed up, disable the backup.

Create a New LRS Backup Vault:

    • In the Azure portal, create a new Recovery Services vault.
    • Select Locally-redundant as the replication type during setup.

Enable Backups for VMs in the New Vault:

    • Configure backup policies and enable backups for your VMs using the new LRS vault.

    Delete the Old GRS Vault:

    • Once all backups are successfully configured in the new vault, you can delete the old GRS vault to avoid additional costs.

This process ensures that you transition to LRS without losing your existing backups
