After the Webcast

I had a few technical problems with the webcast that pushed our start time back about five minutes, but after switching to a different machine things went fine.  I'm now recorded and online here.

I generally don't like giving these webcasts, as I find the lack of a live audience somewhat disconcerting, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.  Thanks to everyone who listened in and submitted questions/comments.  I'd love any additional feedback or questsions---please feel free to post here or shoot me an email: isaack@...

    Thanks again for the presentation. My questions relates to you showing Virtual Earth presenting Spatial data from SQL 2008. Is there a performance hit, and is it significant, in converting from the native storage format to the "Well Known Text" or "Well Known Binary" format? For Virtual Earth applications where the data is rendered on the client and transmitted over the internet should we be converting to "Well Known Text", do we do this in the query itself or in our application code? And then we would transmit this plain text, then parse into VEShapes objects? Or are there javascript functions that will convert from the native storage format directly to VEShapes? Is there a best practice for doing this in both directions, that is data from VE to be stored in the database and from the database to be viewed in VE? John.

    Hi John, Good questions---I should devote a blog post or two to this, I think. Of course there will be some performance hit when converting formats, the question is how large.  We don't currently have evidence to suggest it's very big. My feeling is now that VE supports GeoRSS (which can contain a GML geometry description) the easiest way to do a mashup with VE will be through GML.  I'm going to try and work up some sample code to demonstrate this, but I don't have anything published yet.     Will the VE-based demo application you used be available when you ship the CTP? You mentioned that there will be .NET types for the spatial datatypes. Will those be hidden away in the SqlServer namespaces? .. and will they have all the same Simple Features methods on them? (Relate, envelope, operations etc...)

    Great presentation although my companies Internet connection cut out for 15 minutes in the middle (great timing). I had the exact same question as John. Even if GML turns out to be the perfect/right way, how were you displaying the query results in VE in the demo? Flipping between Enterprise Manager and VE was a bit too fast for me but now I have the video. Thanks, Ryan

    Unfortunately, we can't actually distribute the full demo, as we don't actually own all of the data it relies on.  Also, the basic infrastrucure is a bit old, and with some of the new features in VE, particularly GeoRSS, the demo should probably be written---it should be much simpler than it is. I will try to get something up that will demonstrate how to do this kind of mashup soon. Cheers, -Isaac

    Isaac, You mentioned during the presentation this would be available in a couple weeks.  Any updated word on when the new CTP will be available?   Chris

    Chris, It should be very soon.  It looks like it's been released internally, but hasn't hit the web site yet.   Cheers, -Isaac
