HTPC & ME

Discussions about Windows XP Media Center Edition are always a little odd for me. They center around TV PVR scenarios. I don’t watch TV. I don’t have cable or satellite or an antenna or anything. I don’t want it.

The primary reason for me to have an HTPC is to play music that I ripped from my CDs. CDs are a terribly inconvenient format. Too fragile, not self-indexing, only available in one room at a time, etc.

Secondary reason is the user experience: playing DVDs with the MCE UI is 10x better than using my standalone player. The interface is mediocre by my Windows standards, but fabulous compared to the rest of my HT equipment.

The only thing tempting me to get cable is OLN's cycling coverage.

I am grateful for friends and relatives who feed my habit with VHS tapes.
