A Note From the Author

I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but after six months of relatively civil discourse, a few people have decided to flood the blog with obscene and otherwise off-topic comments. I had to remove over sixty comments just yesterday.

Although I reserve the right to delete or edit any comment for any reason, in general here are the guidelines I follow:

  • No obscene language
  • No personal insults towards me, my co-workers, or other commenters
  • No spam or blatant advertising
  • No totally off-topic comments

As I hope you have seen, I do welcome thoughtful criticism and have been enjoying the dialog we've had over the last six months.

But this needs to remain a respectful forum, one which people feel comfortable reading from work and one which continues to have a high signal to noise ratio.

And for the vast majority of you who have been following the rules, I do humbly apologize for any inconvenience.

    As one of the silent ones that really appreciates your blog I'd just like to say keep up the good work

    It's such a pleasure to hear from behind the scenes and we should all appreciate that such access carries responsibilities to all who seek to post

    After reading about Office 12 on this blog I truly believe you are doing a great service to the world (really!). There are not many people who can say that, but considering the installed userbase this is really an important project. Moreover, this blog is definately one of the best examples of customer dialog I have seen anywhere on the net.

    Basicly I just wanted to offer a few words of support and thanks. Unfortunately, there is always going to be a few bad apples. Don't let them discourage you. Keep up the good work!

    Speaking comments, can anyone tell me what all these "pingback" comments are?

    Seem like annoying gibberish to me.

    There are three blogs every developer should read: Raymond's, Larry Osterman's and yours. It's a shame a few idiots come along every now and again and act up like that.

    Really enjoy your postings, they've opened my eyes to a lot of interesting ideas. Looking forward to reading more, as always.

    Jensen -- Dont let them get ya down! ;-)  This is a great blog and you are quite clearly very good at what you do and very dedicated to it. Keep it up -- we love it.

    Please don't be discouraged by people who play the software sectarian game.  Your blog is one of the very few sites I visit literally everyday (well, excluding weekends), and I've found it to be extremely interesting and professional.  Thank you!

    Unfortunately, such comments cannot be avoided in an open forum like this. Either remove then manually or automatically or require registration, which would be a bad idea in my honest opinion.

    Good work on this blog, I love the newfound openness of MS!

    I'm a silent german reader of your blog and I really appreciate the openness and insight I gain through your posts. It really makes a different if you know why something is the way it is and not criticize blindly. Keep posting.

    This is the only blog I read regularly, too--not every day (I forget), but every "issue" (catching up from time to time). I also am intrigued by the "pingback" posts. I assume this is a reflection of some other blogger's having listed this as one of the blogs he/she reads, but I'd be interested in a fuller explanation.

    You can add me to the list of people who read your blog every day. Please keep up the fascinating, frank posts!

    My job (at a major publisher) revolves around using, developing, and training others to use a set of VBA add-ins for Word, so you can see why I find this so interesting.

    After all, every usability improvement your team makes to Word will make my day easier when I will have one fewer nonintuitive trick to explain over the phone, one fewer trouble spot for authors and editors to get stuck on.

    "Pingback is a method for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to, or referring to their articles.
