Resolution:

Cause determined after comparing various logs that the Cryptographic Services runs under “Network Service” which would require Users to have read access.  Provided BUILTIN\Users with read access permission to Drive C and the .Net Framework 3.5 SP 1 installed successfully

Important Note: This may vary in some machines and the error message may be also different, in that case feel free to contact me or E Mail me. As .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 is a new release and people facing the similar kind of issue will help them resolving the installation issue.

    One of my client Pete Carstensen suggested me one more way making available his comments: I have found a far more surgical way about this.  You can just use cacls to give Network Service to the C drive: Cacls c: /e /g "Network Service":R And then using Explorer go in and set inheritance for "This folder only" on the Network Service account.  I actually just cancel this procedure at the first error, which is fine because the ACE entry is only at the C drive anyhow. There is really no reason to pave the whole drive with Users READ access. Thank you Pete for your suggestion, its really nice find by you.

    Hi Again, I open the "dotnetfx35steup.exe" file and accepts the conditions. The file downloads successfully but I get an error in the installation procedure and it cancels automatically. Then a new window opens with the message "setup.exe has stopped working" (approximate translation from Swedish to English).     I have a similar problem. The reason seems to be that before installing .net framework 3.5 you have to instal .net  framework 2.0 sp1... good luck

    I have error installing .Net3.5 SP1 on XP SP3. "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has encountered a problem during setup.  Setup did not complete correctly. " Checking .NET error txt file reveals problem to do with RBG ras. What services must i enable, or does the solution lies elsewhere?

    Folks, i was having the same problem.  Here is what finally worked for me:

Step 1: Start > Control Panel (use classic view) > Windows Update > Change Settings: Under Important updates, Select  "Never check for updates (not recommended)" OK

Step 2: Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Under Change settings, Select "Off" Apply OK

RE-DOWNLOAD dotnetfx35.exe My old copy was: 237,054KB This still did not work My new copy is: 201,849KB This DID work

Right click on the dotnetfx35.exe file and Run as administrator

It doesn't really make sense to me, but it worked. I have no idea if the first copy of dotnetfx35.exe was just corrupt or how it all relates to changing those settings, but all i know is it DID finally work!!!!!! I sure hope this helps someone as the whole thing was agony!! Best of luck!!

    dont work for me but installing framework 4.0 beta2 and next install 3.5 i will do it! but have error when in i am finishing the installation(but framework was installed) but 2.o dont work good for me, i will open a ticket via microsoft gold partnert in order to fix it . when i have the reply i will i put it there. sorry for my bad english. saludos desde españa!

    I can't believe that microsoft has not delivered a patch to resolve this problem as it is a known issue. The reporting system "send error report" should have alerted them that is what it is for.Perhaps they are hoping that we will pay£40 odd pounds for thier online assistance!

    Use the dotNetfx cleanup tool to remove all existing 3.5 and then start the installer .... www.wintotal.de/softwarearchiv worked for me

    I was having same problem. My professor said run Windows Update. I did that then it worked fine.

    I had the same error and this fixed the problem after searching and trying many things. They key to finding my problem us that I also could not see Roles in Server Manager. Fix: Run the System Update Readiness Tool (Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2008) support.microsoft.com/.../947821 This tool took about 30 minutes to run. I was then able to run the .Net Framework installation without error. If the above tool does not fix it, it may tell you what the problem is, so check the log: %systemroot%logsCBScheckSUR.log Good luck. Very frustrating error.
