Office 2010, Hello World

Today, at our annual TechEd event held in the US we are announcing that attendees will make up the first segment of our limited Technical Preview program that will kick off in July. We have some additional content we will be releasing going into this milestone so keep checking back (check out www.office2010themovie.com as well).

So while we aren't ready to start demoing and sharing all of the features quite yet, we have heard the feedback loud and clear that requirements for running our software needs to be available ASAP (you will see if you look here that our server products have released similar information). To that end, this post will cover the preliminary system requirements for Office 2010.

1. Office 2010 will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

2. Office 2010 will run on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

3. You don't need to replace hardware that is capable of running 2007, it will support Office 2010. Like Windows 7 has demonstrated, we realize that taking advantage of the hardware you already own is just as important as supporting all the new technology coming out.

Below, we have tried to cover some of the common questions that we are anticipating on this topic. If we missed something please let us know in the comments. Anything that we can share at this point, we will.

Q: What is technical preview?

A: Technical preview is an engineering milestone leading towards RTM that Office 2010 and related products will reach in July 2009.

Q: Will customers or partners be given access to the products at the technical preview milestone?

A: Beginning at the technical preview milestone, we will conduct an invitation only technical preview program where participants will able to experience Office Professional Plus 2010 and Visio 2010. You can sign up to be on the list for entry at office2010themovie.com.

Q: Will I need to upgrade hardware to install Office 2010 and related products?

A: Office 2010 Suite products are offered in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions so customers will not be required to upgrade 32-bit PC’s and Laptops to 64-bit hardware to run Office 2010 Suite Products. Certain hardware configurations and operating system versions customers currently have deployed may require an upgrade to run server and client products.

  Hi, Our company produce a COM add-in which allows Excel to be used as a post-processor for the finite element code that our business is built on.  Almost all of our clients use this approach to automate their post-processing requirements. This add-in is implemented in a 32 bit DLL and for various reasons it's difficult for us to port to 64 bit, at least in the short term. I realise that it's early days for Office 2010 but it would be really nice if you could blog about the implications of 64 bit versions for 32 bit add-ins.  Since there is such a huge add-in ecosystem I'm sure you are very alive to this issue.

  Mr. Dee, XP is meant to include Professional as well.  With a 64 bit OS, you can run either the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Office on it. 64 bit Office will only run on the 64 bit versions of Windows however. That help?

  Will the 'Ultimate Steal' promotion be carried over to Office 2010? Or some other kind of significant discount to us poor students? :D If not will there be some kind of discount to upgrade for those who just bought Office 2007?

  I notice there was no mention of support for Windows XP Professional x64 for either the 32 or 64 bit versions of Office 2010 considering that Windows XP Professional x64 falls under the same support structure as Windows XP Professional x86.

  Will there be an option to use the Classic UI or are we stuck with the Ribbon thing once again? The Ribbon is a major reason I chose to move back to Office 2003.

  Why is SP3 a requirement for XP? What's the rationale behind that? Please leave it up to your customer whether he wants to install SP3 or not and stop adding pseudo-requirements to force your customers.

  I notice there is no mention of Server OS... is Office 2010 supported on Windows Server 2003 x86 and x64, specifically with Terminal Services? I expect Windows 2008 x86 and x64 and Windows 2008 R2 are supported, but I believe Windows 2003 Server goes out of mainstream support in 2010 hence the curiosity. Regards, SteveK

1. What is the criteria for ones who sign up for the technical beta? Who get invited?
2. Will SKUs be the same? For once, why doesn't Microsoft include Visio in Ultimate and OneNote in more SKUs? What about Semblio?
3. Will the individual app team blogs start blogging on 2010 releases?
4. Any more programs getting OpenXML?
5. Will testers who submit a certain number of bugs get a free copy of 2010 when it RTMs? Hope it'll be faster than 2007. Compared to Office 2003, 2007 was a huge step back in terms of performance. :-)

  I couldn't help but notice that the video said that there will be "no undo".  I have to guess you didn't mean that Undo (Ctrl+Z) is being removed, so what was meant by there no longer being "Undo"?  I understand that no more "CTRL+ALT+DELETE" is a stability assurance, but what about "Undo"?

  I miss a function in all Excel versions, even in 2010. When I have 2 excel windows with to different sheets on my screen and display 'Precedent cells' or 'Dependent cells' it would very, very helpful to see the startpoint and the endpoint of the cell dependency graphical in both windows at the same time! :-(

  Windows XP Pro x64 is NOT supported.  I tried to install the beta today, and it said it only supports Vista x64 or Win 7 x64.  FAIL.

  i've downloaded visio 2010 beta 64bit, then double click the install image and nothing happened.  NO ERROR messages at all.   Check the uninstall page of control panel, visio is not installed.

  Btw. if I switch to "Windows Classic" I expect that all programs are presented in the classic style - without UI gimmicks like Ribbon. Just menus and toolbars. Microsft has another meaning of usability and assistive technologies - per application?

  Aargh...it's so fast after finishing the installation on win xp sp3...but after rebooting, my laptop is being BLUEscreen.....aargh do I need to reinstall windows again? Many jobs must be cancelled because of that...
