What would you do?

So, after my webcast today, I went down to the local KFC and ordered a chicken wing meal.  While I was sitting there, a guy ordered the buffet.  He got a salad and a plate of chicken from the buffet.  To my suprise, he pulled a bag out of his coat and hid it on the inside of his coat and proceeded to put the chicken from his plate in the plastic bag.

He was looking around making sure none of the employees saw him do it, so he knew it was against their policy/rules for the buffet.  I just sat there quietly eating my wings.  After a while, he finished his salad and proceeded back to the buffet and promptly got another plate of chicken.  When he returned to his table, he started eating a piece and put the rest in his bag again.

I was suprised that he was doing this, but I decided at that point not to say anything because he was "obviously" doing it because of his situation.  Or so I thought.

Not two minutes after this... I heard a cell phone ring.  Guess who?  It was that guy's phone.  He pulled it out of his pocket, answered it and ASKED THE OTHER PERSON ON THE PHONE IF THEY WANTED ANYTHING FROM KFC!  Can you belive that?

Now, my feelings about this guy completely changed as did my reaction.  However, my intention of this post isn't to tell you how I handled it, but to ask you... what would you do?

    Interesting, Bill.  I would like to think I would do something.  First thought is try to embarrass the guy to try to make him see how bad he looks.  Following on your first impression, I would like go up to him, offer him a couple bucks, say something like I hope circumstances start to work better for him so that he doesn't have to steal food.   Second thought I had was to get out my cell phone, and in a stage whisper, say "Is this the manager of KFC store at ...?  This guy, <give description> is stealing from the buffet and stashing food in his coat."  I may or may not actually make a call, but I would make sure he hears me, and hopefully he drops it there.   Before I worked in IT, I managed restaurants, mostly chain stores such as these.  I appreciated it when other customers "ratted out" cheaters and theives, and then I would be able to take the compassioned company representative role to both the offender and reporter (Usually would thank the patron that reported the incident and give them a coupon or free meal business card, then do something like politely ask the offender to pay for stolen meal in lieu of calling police.)  I tried to help both the honest people to feel appreciated they did right, and still try to strike a balance with the offender that what he did is not tolerated, but I still wanted a good customer back. Hope that you helped the manager/proprietor to do the right thing.

    You should have pretended to be The Chicken Police! Flashed a business card really close so he couldn't read it, told him 'Chicken Police. Assume the position' and frisked is jacket making the chicken fall on the floor. Would have been fun and maybe free KFC for life :)

    The Chiken wings at KFC were flown away. Writing a little note to this man I think would server the purpose, hopefully he is able to read. "how would you feel if you had a store and someone comes and grab away your merchandise" It is not the eyes that can't see, it's the heart that is blinde. Happy new year
