Adding Waves to a DLS Collection

Windows Media Encoder SDK banner art

Waves for DLS instruments are taken from .wav files or from other collections. DirectMusic Producer does not have the ability to record waves.

Waves can be in mono or stereo format. It is recommended that waves placed in DLS collections have sample rates between 3kHz and 80kHz. If a wave's sample rate is outside of these boundaries, its pitch will be incorrect on playback.

Using extremely large waves in a DLS instrument is not recommended. To avoid overtaxing system memory, it is better to split a large wave into smaller sections and combine multiple smaller sections in an instrument sound.

You can add a wave to the Waves folder of a DLS collection in the project tree in the following ways:

  • Right-click the Waves folder and click Insert Wave on the shortcut menu. You can select multiple files in the Insert Wave Files Into Collection dialog box.
  • Drag a wave from another DLS collection or from a top-level wave (.wvp) component to the DLS Waves folder. To copy the wave, press CTRL while dragging; or right-click to drag, then select Copy from the shortcut menu displayed when you release the mouse button. Note that the last saved version of the wave is moved or copied; any changes made in Wave Editor but not saved are lost.
