DLS Patch Conflicts

Windows Media Encoder SDK banner art

When you create new DLS instruments, it is recommended that you avoid using identical combinations of MSB, LSB, Patch, and Drums settings for two instruments in a project. This includes DLS instruments that you copy and place in a separate DLS collection.

When you edit these values for an instrument, they are compared with the equivalent values for all other instruments in collections that have been opened during this work session, even collections that have subsequently been closed. They are also compared with the default GM.dls collection. If all four values match, there is a conflict.

If you use the arrow keys to select numbers in the boxes, number combinations already in use are skipped to prevent conflicts. You can override this function manually by typing numbers in the edit boxes.

If you deliberately create a DLS instrument that conflicts with an instrument in the GM.dls collection, the DirectMusic playback components use the new instrument in place of the corresponding instrument in the GM.dls collection.
