Allow non-authenticated users to participate in workflows

By enabling this option, you can allow either or both of the following types of non-authenticated users to participate in workflows: internal users who do not have access to the site and external users who do not have access to any internal network resources. For internal users, an e-message is sent that explains how to request access to the site (subject to administrator approval). For external users, an e-mail message is sent with an attached document or list item for the participant to review or sign.
Warning
Enabling this option does not give not give non-authorized users access to the site. However, the e-mail message and attachment might contain sensitive information. Before enabling these settings, consider if there are possible information disclosure risks with respect to users who do not have access to the site.
Important
You must be a member of the Farm Administrators SharePoint group to perform this procedure.
Allowing non-authenticated users to participate in workflows
Allow internal users without site access to participate in workflows
From Central Administration, click the Application Management tab on the top navigation bar.
On the Application Management page, in the Workflow Management section, click Workflow Settings.
On the Workflow Settings page, in the Workflow Task Notifications section, click Yes to send an e-mail alert to internal users who do not have access to the site when they are assigned a workflow task. This setting is enabled by default.
Allow external users to participate in workflows
From Central Administration, click the Application Management tab on the top navigation bar.
On the Application Management page, in the Workflow Management section, click Workflow Settings.
On the Workflow Settings page, in the Workflow Task Notifications section, click Yes to allow external users to participate in workflow by sending them a copy of the document. This setting is disabled by default.
Note
If you later decide that you do not want non-authenticated participants to participate in workflows, access this page again and click No to disable one or both of these options.
