Administrators must enable usage analytics before they can monitor the usage data on their sites. After usage analytics are enabled, administrators can monitor the following statistics for their sites and site collections:

  • Page requests and page hits

  • Number of users

  • Referring and destination sites

  • Search queries and results

  • Bandwidth usage

  • Storage limits for personal sites

Usage reporting includes the following components, all of which must be enabled before you can monitor usage reports:

  • A usage logging service in Windows SharePoint Services that must be enabled in Central Administration

  • A shared service for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 that enables monitoring across the Shared Services Provider (SSP)

  • A reporting feature that must be enabled for every site collection that you monitor

Task Requirements

The following are required to perform the procedures for this task:

  • To enable usage logging for a farm, you must be a member of the Farm Administrators group.

  • To enable the usage reporting shared service, you must be a member of the Shared Services Administration site and you must have the Manage usage analytics service permission.

  • To activate the reporting feature for a site collection, you must be a site collection administrator.

To enable usage analytics, perform the following procedures in the order listed:

  1. Enable Windows SharePoint Services usage logging

  2. Enable the usage reporting shared service
