In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, administrators can target links so that they only appear to users who are members of particular audiences. If a user is a member of a targeted audience, the targeted link appears on a site or within a particular client application. If a user is not a member of any targeted audience, the link is not displayed.
Three types of links can be targeted:
Trusted My Site host location links
Published links to Office client applications
Personalization site links
Each type of targeted link is stored in a SharePoint list that can be accessed from the Shared Services Administration site by anyone with read permissions to that site. Targeted audiences must be configured and compiled by an audiences manager. For more information about targeting content to audiences, see Targeting content.

Publish links to Office client applications
Administrators can add links to SharePoint sites and lists from Office client applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These links appear on the My SharePoint Sites tab of the Open, Save, and Save As dialog boxes when opening and saving documents from these applications. Links only appear on the My SharePoint Sites tab if the person using the application is a member of a targeted audience. If no audience is selected, the links appear in the tab for all users within the current Shared Services Provider (SSP).
Target personalization sites
Administrators can add links to personalization sites from the My Site top link bar. Links are displayed between My Home and My Profile on the top link bar on the personal site for all users in targeted audiences. If no audience is selected, a link to the site is added to the My Site top link bar for every personal site in the SSP.
Add trusted My Site host locations
My Site host locations added as links in the trusted My Site host locations list can be accessed by all users who are members of targeted audiences. Targeted users can view profiles and shared content on personal sites for other users in each host location. When clicking a link to a personal site or public profile—whether it is the site or profile of the current user or another user—the trusted My Site host location list is used to select which SSP to use when displaying information.
Trusted My Site host locations are often used in multiple SSP scenarios, such as geographically distributed or multiple forest deployments, and are particularly useful when groups of users are being migrated from one SSP to another SSP.
For more information about trusted My Site host locations, see Manage My Site host locations.
Task requirements
The following are required to perform the procedures for this task:
Read permission to the Shared Services Administration site.
Audiences that are used to target links must be created and compiled by an audiences manager who has the Manage Audiences permission enabled.
Note
An administrator does not have to be an audiences manager and does not require the Manage Audiences permission to select an existing audience. Any user with access to the Shared Services Administration site can target links to existing audiences.
