This article lists technologies that are used by Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.
Active Directory A Microsoft technology, part of the Active Platform, that is designed to enable applications to find, use, and manage directory resources (for example, user names, network printers, and permissions) in a distributed computing environment.
ASP.NET master page Allows you to create a consistent layout for the pages in the application. Master pages contain controls that are shared across multiple page layouts, such as navigation, search, or language-preference for multilingual sites. Page layouts contain field controls and Web Parts.
Business Data Catalog A business integration feature that enables Office SharePoint Server 2007 to surface business data from back-end server applications without any coding. It bridges the gap between the portal site and business applications and enables site designers to bring in key data from various business applications to Office SharePoint Server 2007 lists, Web Parts, search, user profiles, and custom applications.
Internet Information Services 6.0 A Web server that provides reliable, manageable, and scalable Web application infrastructure for all versions of Windows Server 2003. Before you install and configure Office SharePoint Server 2007, you must install and configure Internet Information Services (IIS) so that your computer can act as a Web server.
Microsoft Exchange Server Offers built-in protection against unsolicited commercial e-mail and viruses, provides anywhere access, and provides operational efficiency.
Microsoft .NET Framework The managed code programming model for building applications on Windows clients, servers, and mobile or embedded devices. Developers use the .NET Framework to build many types of applications: Web applications, server applications, smart client applications, console applications, and database applications. For Office SharePoint Server 2007, .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 are required.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Controls the way e-mail is transported and delivered across the Internet to the destination server. SMTP receives and sends e-mail between servers. By default, the SMTP service is installed with the POP3 service to provide complete e-mail services.
The SMTP service is automatically installed on the computer where the POP3 service is installed to allow users to send outgoing e-mail messages. When you create a domain that uses the POP3 service, the domain is also added to the SMTP service to allow mailboxes in that domain to send outgoing e-mail. The SMTP service on the mail server receives incoming mail and transfers the e-mail to the mail store. By default, the SMTP service is installed with the POP3 service to provide complete e-mail services.
Single sign-on (SSO) Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides a default single sign-on service for the storage and mapping of credentials that are used to connect to third-party or back-end applications. Many companies develop an in-house credential storage system or use a solution other than the Microsoft Single Sign-On. Instead of maintaining credential mapping in two places, Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides a mechanism, pluggable SSO, to specify an alternative SSO provider to the standard SSO provider in Office SharePoint Server 2007.
Microsoft SQL Server A database platform for large-scale online transaction processing (OLTP), data warehousing, and e-commerce applications. It is also a business intelligence platform for data integration, analysis, and reporting solutions.
Windows SharePoint Services technology provides a foundation platform for building Web-based business applications that can flex and scale easily to meet the changing and growing needs of an enterprise. Administrative controls for managing storage and Web infrastructure let IT departments implement and manage a high-performance collaboration environment.
Windows Workflow Foundation The programming model, engine, and tools for building workflow enabled applications on Windows. It consists of a .NET Framework 3.0 namespace, an in-process workflow engine, and designers for Visual Studio 2005. Windows Workflow Foundation is available for both client and server versions of Windows. Windows Workflow Foundation includes support for both system workflow and human workflow across a variety of scenarios, including workflow within line-of-business applications, user interface page-flow, document-centric workflow, human workflow, composite workflow for service-oriented applications, business rule–driven workflow, and workflow for systems management.
