Configure Business Data Catalog diagnostic logging

The Business Data Catalog routes the results of interaction between users and your Web applications to your line-of-business applications. The Business Data Catalog logs details of those actions to the Business Data Catalog trace log and/or Windows Event Log, depending on how logging is configured.

Logging business data events

Business data events are logged in the Windows Event Log and/or the Business Data Catalog trace log. You configure event throttling settings to control how many events are recorded in each log, according to the criticality of the events. For example, if a business data event occurs and is equally severe as or more severe than the business data category's logging level, that event is written to the logs. If an event occurs, but it is less severe than the business data category's logging level, that event is not written to the logs.

By default, the Business Data Catalog creates trace log files every 30 minutes and stores them for 48 hours, and deletes the oldest logs as it creates newer ones. You can configure how many trace log files exist at one time and how long events are to be captured to a single log file.

You can also configure retention settings for the Windows Event Log.

Configure Business Data Catalog diagnostic logging

Use the following task to configure Business Data Catalog diagnostic logging.

Task requirements

The following is required to perform the procedures for this task:

  • Administrators must be site administrators on the Shared Services Administration site.

To configure Business Data Catalog diagnostic logging

  1. On the Central Administration page, in the Quick Launch, click Operations.

  2. On the Operations page, in the Logging and Reporting section, click Diagnostic Logging.

  3. On the Diagnostic Logging page, in the Event Throttling section, from the Select a category list, select Business Data.

  4. From the Least critical event to report to the event log list, select the lowest event level to record to the Windows Event Log. Selecting Information records the most detail. Selecting None disables recording events to the Windows Event Log.

  5. From the Least critical event to report to the trace log list, select the lowest event level to record to the Business Data Catalog trace log. Selecting Verbose records the most detail. Selecting None disables recording events to the Business Data Catalog trace log.

  6. In the Trace Log section, in the Path box, specify the path for the trace log.

  7. In the Number of log files box, type a value for the maximum number of event logs that can be created. When that number is reached and a new log file is needed, the oldest log file is deleted.

  8. In the Number of minutes to use a log file box, type a value, in minutes, to set how long to capture events to a single log file.

  9. Click OK.
