Audience compilation failed - Event 5693 (SharePoint Server 2010)

Alert Name:   Audience compilation failed

Event ID:   5693

Summary:   To make it easier to target specific information to specific users, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 administrators can define rules that dynamically compile users into audiences. For example, all salespeople in the company can be compiled into an audience named Sales. If the audience compilation process fails, this event is logged.

Symptoms:   One or more of the following symptoms might appear:

  • Users see more information than administrators intended for them to see.

  • This event appears in the event log: Event ID: 5693 Description: Failed to compile audience. Exception was: '<Exception>'.

Cause:   One or more of the audience rules is not correctly defined or the User Profile service cannot access the parameter values for the rule — for example, the information for a particular user is not accessible.

Resolution:   Manually compile the audience rule

  1. Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Farm Administrators group.

  2. On the Central Administration Home page, click Application Management.

  3. On the Application Management page, in the Service Applications section, click Manage service applications.

  4. On the Service Applications page, click the User Profile Service.

  5. On the User Profile Service page, in the People section, click Manage Audiences.

  6. On the View Audiences page, click the audience, and, from the context menu, click Compile.
