How to: Change the Name of a Registered Server or Registered Server Group (SQL Server Management Studio)

Registered Servers retains the name of the server or server group that was provided at the time of registration. The name can be changed at any time. Changing the name of a server in Registered Servers only changes how the name is displayed. To connect to a different server, you must edit the connection properties of the registered server.

To change the name of a server

  1. In Registered Servers, right-click a server or server group, point to Edit, and then click Server Registration Properties.

  2. In the Registered server name box, type the new name for the server registration, and then click Save.

To change the name of a server group

  1. In Registered Servers, right-click a server or server group, point to Edit, and then click Server Group Properties.

  2. In the Server group name box, type the new name for the server group, and then click Save.
