Update to shut down services is not installed

The information in this article applies to:

  • Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server

  • Application-tier server

  • Data-tier server

  • Team Foundation Server Proxy server

  • Health Check

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server checks for the presence of the software update that is described in article 919156 "FIX: The Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server database may become corrupted when you upgrade a Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server installation" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Two versions of this update were issued, version 1 (file version 50727.780) and version 2 (file version 50727.886).

Note

This rule check is performed only on servers where Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server is installed.

An information message appears if either version of the update is installed. An error appears if neither version is installed or if version 2 is not installed.

To resolve this issue, install version 2 of this update. For more information, see "Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server Quiescence GDR" at the Microsoft Download Center.

Note

You do not have to uninstall version 1 of the update before you install version 2. You can install both versions without problems. Also, you can install this update regardless of whether you have already installed SP1 for Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server.

If you install this update, you can shut down Team Foundation Server services. You must install it before any other updates for Team Foundation Server. Specifically, this update addresses the following issues:

  • You cannot install Service Pack 1 for Team Foundation Server or other updates on a SQL cluster.

  • You might not be able to install Service Pack 1 for Team Foundation Server or other updates because of connection issues to the databases for Team Foundation Server.

  • Databases for Team Foundation Server might be left in Single-User mode after a failure as you try to install Service Pack 1 for Team Foundation Server or other updates.

You should install version 2 of this update on all servers where Team Foundation Server is installed. This requirement includes single-server deployments (application-tier/data-tier), dual-server deployments (application-tier and data-tier servers), and Team Foundation Server Proxy servers.

You should install version 2 of this update before you perform the next servicing operation on a server where Team Foundation Server is installed. You do not need to apply the update more than once. Servicing operations include the following:

  • Repairing Team Foundation Server

  • Installing or uninstalling service packs

  • Installing or uninstalling other updates

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Administrators security group on the server that is running Team Foundation components.
