Design Templates

Design templates are macro components that include all of the basic resources necessary to build a particular device such as a gaming console or retail point-of-sale terminal. Design templates are provided with the development tools and are ready to use. Adding a design template to your configuration is a one step process, and saves time and simplifies the manner in which you add functionality to your run-time image. Configurations can include additional components and resources along with design templates. After being added to a configuration, a design template can be customized to provide only the features that you need.
The following table shows the design templates that Microsoft provides. They are available in the Design Templates node of the component browser tree in Target Designer.
Design template | Description |

Advanced Set Top Box |
Includes the components required to create the Advanced Set-Top Box (ASTB). Provides the functionality of the basic set-top box and also supports DVD playback, DVR, Web browsing, networking, universal serial bus (USB), Terminal Services, and Windows Media Player. |
Basic Set Top Box |
Includes the components required to create the basic Set-Top Box (STB). Provides analog TV support and audio support. |
Digital Set Top Box |
Includes the components required to create the Digital Set-Top Box (DSTB). Provides digital TV support and audio support. |
Home Gateway |
Includes the components required to create a device that provides a gateway to the Internet. Provides file and print services, a virtual private network (VPN) firewall, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), and Terminal Services. |
Information Appliance |
Includes the components required to create an information appliance. Provides a shell, Web browser, networking, USB, Terminal Server Client, DirectX, Windows Media Player, and Winlogon. |
Kiosk/Gaming Console |
Includes the components required to create a kiosk or game console. Provides limited Microsoft® Win32® functionality, DirectX, USB, networking, and a limited Web browser. |
Network Attached Storage |
Includes the components required to create a file server. Provides file and Web browsing functionality. |
Retail Point Of Sale Terminal |
Includes the components required to create a Retail Point-of-Sale (RPOS) device. Provides Web browsing and basic TCP/IP networking. |
Windows-based Terminal Professional |
Includes the components required to create a Windows-based Terminal (WBT). Provides a shell, Terminal Server Client, Terminal Services, USB, networking, Web browsing, Windows Media Player, and Winlogon. |
