ActiveSync Transport (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

1/5/2010

Microsoft ActiveSync technology provides data replication and synchronization by comparing the data on a target device with the data on the desktop computer to which the target device is connected. After comparing data, ActiveSync updates both the target device and the desktop computer by using the most recent information. The ActiveSync application is a connectivity application that runs on a desktop computer and makes connecting to a target device easier.

The ActiveSync transport provides an application-level connection to a target device by using a partnership that you establish with the ActiveSync application. To use the ActiveSync transport, you must first establish a serial connection between the development workstation and the target device.

The ActiveSync transport does not require configuration because the transport uses the partnership that you establish with the ActiveSync application. This partnership enables the transfer of data between the development workstation and the target device.

If the OS on the target device includes an Ethernet driver, make sure that the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for the Ethernet driver and ActiveSync are on different subnets. If the Ethernet driver and ActiveSync share the same subnet, the target device uses Ethernet as the default route for communications. This setup causes the connection between the development workstation and the target device over ActiveSync to fail.

Procedures

To establish a connection to a target device with ActiveSync

  1. On your development workstation, install ActiveSync 3.5 or a later version.

  2. Connect a null modem or crossover cable from your development workstation to your target device.

  3. Download a run-time image to your target device.

  4. On your target device, start Repllog.exe.

To add the Repllog.exe executable to the target device, you must include ActiveSync in the OS design for your run-time image.

  5. On your desktop computer, select Get Connected from the File menu of the ActiveSync window.

  6. After you establish a connection to your target device, select Guest.

  7. Open a remote tool, and then use Platform Manager to establish a connection.
