Support for DLNA Media Devices in Windows Embedded Compact 7
3/12/2014
Many people have multiple computers and devices on their home network. These devices often share media files between themselves. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) provides guidelines and protocols for the seamless interoperability of such devices. These guidelines allow devices from different manufacturers to coexist and share media on the same network. Windows Embedded Compact 7 uses the latest DLNA 1.5 functionality to enable interoperability among not only on devices that run Windows, but also other DLNA-compliant devices.
The DLNA guidelines use the UPnP networking architecture for device discovery and control because UPnP provides peer-to-peer network connectivity for personal computers, wireless devices, and other intelligent appliances in a distributed, open-networked architecture.
Although the UPnP and UPnP AV framework implementations on Compact 7 provide API support for building UPnP devices, including multimedia devices, only the DLNA media devices implementation for home networks is discussed in this guide.
The target audience of this guide is the developer who is familiar with Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology and has an interest in building DLNA media devices for home networks using Compact 7.
