Configuring the DHCP Server

After you have created a domain, you must configure the DHCP server on TESTSERVER. Each wireless client will receive an IP address from this DHCP server. DHCP server maintains an IP address pool, and assigns IP addresses to devices on the network per request. For more information about how to configure the DHCP server, see the Windows 2000 Server Help.

To configure the DHCP Server

  1. On TESTSERVER, from AdministrativeTools, open DHCP.

  2. Expand the console tree, and then choose the server node. From the Action menu, choose New Scope. The New Scope Wizard appears.

  3. On the Scope Name page, type Testscope as the scope name, add a description for the scope, and then choose Next.

  4. On the IP Address Range page, type the following values:

    Note   Do not change the default value for Length.

    Start IP address 10.11.0.1
    End IP address 10.11.0.254
    Subnet mask 255.255.0.0

  5. Choose Next.

  6. Choose Next for the following two pages of the wizard.

  7. On the Configure DHCP Options page, choose Yes, I want to configure these options now, and then choose Next.

  8. On the Router (Default Gateway) page, in the IP address box, type 10.11.0.1 as the IP address, choose Add, and then choose Next.

  9. On the Domain Name and DNS Servers page, type the following values.

    Item Value
    Parent domain TESTDOMAIN.local
    Server name TESTSERVER

  10. Choose Resolve. The server name will be resolved to an IP address that appears in the IP address box. To add the IP address to your list, choose Add, and then choose Next.

  11. On the WINS Servers page, in the Server name field, type TESTSERVER, and then choose Resolve. The server name will be resolved to an IP address that appears in the IP address field. To add the IP address to your list, choose Add, and then choose Next.

  12. On the Activate Scope page, choose Yes, I want to activate this scope now, and then choose Next.

  13. To complete the New Scope Wizard, choose Finish.

  14. To reserve static IP addresses for your three wireless access points, select and then right-click the Reservations node in the console tree, and then choose New Reservation.

    Be sure to fill in all of the required fields in the New Reservation dialog box.

    The following table shows the values to assign to each access point.

    Reservation name IP address
    OPEN 10.11.0.11
    SHARED 10.11.0.12
    CE8021X 10.11.0.13

    You must also provide a MAC address and a description for each access point. To obtain the MAC address for each access point, refer to the product-specific documentation.

    DHCP will assign a static IP address to the access points listed in this table. You also have to specify the static IP address on the configuration page for each access point.

    Do not change the selection under Supported types.

  15. Choose Add.

  16. To authorize the DHCP server, right-click the server name in the console tree, and then choose Authorize.

  17. Shut down and restart TESTSERVER.

  18. Connect each access point to the server.

    After a connection is established, the server assigns the appropriate reserved address to each access point.

  19. To verify that the DHCP server has assigned the appropriate address to each client, open the Web browser on TESTSERVER, and type the IP address of each access point in the address bar. The configuration page appears in your browser window.
