Configuring a Hard Disk Drive with the BIOS Boot Loader
Use the two formatted floppy disks, the Setupdisk.144 disk image, and the Bootdisk.144 disk image to configure the hard disk drive with an active partition so you can boot an OS image on a hard disk drive with the BIOS boot loader.
To configure the hard disk drive with the BIOS boot loader
In %SystemRoot%\Program Files\Windows CE Platform Builder\4.20\CEPB\Utilities, run Websetup.exe.
With this utility, you can create boot disk images. You only need to install this utility once on your development workstation.
On your development workstation, insert a floppy disk, and then in %_WINCEROOT%\Public\Common\Oak\Csp\i486\BIOSLoader\DiskImages, run Setupdisk.144.
This creates a BIOS boot loader setup disk that prepares the hard disk with the BIOS boot loader.
On your development workstation, insert another floppy disk, and then in %_WINCEROOT%\Public\Common\Oak\Csp\i486\BIOSLoader\DiskImages, run Bootdisk.144.
This boot disk contains the CEPC boot loader that the BIOS boot loader boots on the floppy disk. Platform Builder uses this to download an OS image.
On the CEPC, insert the 3.5-inch floppy disk that contains the Setupdisk.144 disk image, and restart the CEPC.
After the CEPC starts, at the MS-DOS prompt, use the Fdisk utility to delete all existing partition information from the hard disk, and then create and activate a new partition.
The BIOS boot loader recognizes FAT12 and FAT16 partitions.
Restart the CEPC.
After the CEPC starts, at the MS-DOS prompt, use the Format utility to format the hard disk.
When prompted to name the Volume, press ENTER to input a blank Volume name.
After formatting the hard disk, on the CEPC, from the Setupdisk.144 boot disk, run Mkdisk.bat.
Pass Mkdisk.bat the drive letter of the hard disk you formatted in the previous procedure. For example, if the drive letter of your hard disk letter is C, type mkdisk c:.
On the CEPC, insert the Bootdisk.144 boot floppy disk.
