Find RIS client computers

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

To find RIS client computers

Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
In the console tree, right-click the applicable Remote Installation Services (RIS) server.

Where?
- Active Directory Users and Computers/Applicable domain/Applicable organizational unit (such as Computers)/Applicable RIS server
Click Properties, and then in the Properties dialog box, click the Remote Install tab.
In the Remote Install dialog box, click Show Clients.
Scan the list for the appropriate client computer. If you know the globally unique identifier (GUID) of the client computer, you can also type the GUID and then click Find Now.

Notes

To perform this task, the only access required is read access to the domain. Performing this task does not require you to have administrative credentials. Therefore, as a security best practice, consider performing this task as a user without administrative credentials.
To open Active Directory Users and Computers, click Start, click Run, type dsa.msc, and then click OK. For information about creating a shortcut so you can easily open Active Directory Users and Computers with runas, see Related Topics.
This topic does not apply to Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
The Show Clients feature searches for all client computers that are prestaged for this RIS server.
When using the Show Clients feature in multiple RIS server environments, the search results might include client computers from multiple servers that have similar names. For example, if you have multiple RIS servers with computer names such as RISsvr1, RISsvr10, and RISsvr100, and you search for RISsvr1, the list will display the client computers that install from all three servers.
