Display a Custom Message when Group Policy Prevents Device Installation

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can use this procedure to customize the message displayed to a user whenever policy prevents the installation of a device.

Windows displays a default message whenever Group Policy prevents a device from being installed. Use this procedure below to customize the title and text of the message.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To customize the message displayed when installation of a device is blocked

  1. Open the Group Policy Management Editor. To do so, click Start, and then in the Start Search box, type mmc gpedit.msc.

  2. In the navigation pane, open the following folders: Local Computer Policy, Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Device Installation, Device Installation Restrictions.

  3. In the details pane, double-click Display a custom message when installation is prevented by policy (balloon title).

  4. Click Enabled.

  5. In the Main Text box, type the title that you want displayed to your users. Enter a maximum of 63 characters, and then click OK.

  6. In the details pane, double-click Display a custom message when installation is prevented by policy (balloon text).

  7. Click Enabled.

  8. In the Details Text box, type the text that you want displayed to your users. Enter a maximum of 128 characters, and then click OK.

Additional considerations

  • If you edit policy settings locally on a computer, you will affect the settings on only that one computer. If you configure the settings in a Group Policy object (GPO) hosted in an Active Directory domain, then the settings apply to all computers that are subject to that GPO. For more information about Group Policy in an Active Directory domain, see Group Policy (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=55625).
