Resolve

Resend the fax

For a fax transmission to succeed:

  • The fax line cannot be not busy.
  • The call must be answered.
  • The call must be answered by a fax device.
  • The transmission must not be interrupted.
  • A fatal error cannot occur while transmitting the fax.
  • There must be a dial tone to transmit the fax.
  • The fax must be submitted correctly.

If a fax transmission fails, and the maximum number of retries has not been reached, the Fax service will attempt to resend the fax. If this does not work or the Fax service has reached the maximum number of retries, you should try the following:

  1. Confirm the recipient's fax number.
  2. Confirm that the phone line, fax sending device, and fax receiving device are working properly.
  3. Review the activity log for further details and potential solutions.

To access the fax activity log:

  1. To open Windows Explorer, right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. In the left pane, click the disk that contains the operating system.
  3. On the toolbar, click Organize, click Folder and Search Options, click the View tab, and then click Show Hidden Files and Folders. Close the dialog box.
  4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to %systemdrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax\ActivityLog.
  5. View the file InboxLog.txt. Each row in InboxLog.txt is an incoming fax job. In the row for a given failed incoming fax transmission, review the Status and Extended Status fields for information about the failure.
