Create a Demand-Dial Interface

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

Demand-dial interfaces connect routers on either public or private networks. A demand-dial interface can be either on-demand (activated only when needed) or persistent (always connected) and initiate one-way or two-way connections.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To add a demand-dial interface

  1. In the RRAS MMC snap-in, expand Your Server Name. If you are using Server Manager, then expand Routing and Remote Access.

  2. Right-click Network Interfaces, and then click New Demand-dial interface.

  3. Follow the instructions in the Demand-Dial Interface wizard.

To use the demand-dial interface, create a route that uses the new demand-dial interface as the interface to the destination network.

To configure a demand-dial interface to be persistent or on-demand

  1. In the RRAS MMC snap-in, in the navigation pane, click Network Interfaces.

  2. Right-click the demand-dial network interface, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Interface Name Properties dialog box, select the Options tab.

  4. Under Connection type, select one of the following:

    • Demand-dial. This option specifies that the connection is established only when needed and is disconnected after being idle for the number of minutes specified in Idle time before hanging up.

    • Persistent connection. The option specifies that the connection is established immediately and is reestablished whenever the Routing and Remote Access service starts.

To configure a demand-dial interface to use specified security settings

  1. In the RRAS MMC snap-in, in the navigation pane, click Network Interfaces.

  2. Right-click the demand-dial network interface, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Interface Name Properties dialog box, select the Security tab.

  4. Under Type of VPN, select the type of virtual private network (VPN) that you want the connection to use.

  5. Under Data encryption, specify the encryption requirements for this connection.

  6. Under Authentication, select one of the following options:

    • Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). Click Properties to configure this option.

    • Allow these protocols. Select the authentication protocols to configure this option.
