RD Virtualization Host Migration: Migrating the RD Virtualization Host Role Service

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

This topic presents the procedures for the migration of the RD Virtualization Host role service.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, on both the source and destination RD Virtualization Host servers, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review details about using the appropriate accounts and group memberships at Local and Domain Default Groups (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83477).

Migrating the RD Virtualization Host role service

Migrate the RD Virtualization Host role service by using the steps in this topic and the data that you added to the RD Virtualization Host Migration: Appendix A: Migration Data Collection Worksheets.

Begin the migration by using the steps in the Export the virtual machines to the destination server to export the virtual machines you recorded on the data worksheet. After you have exported the virtual machines to the destination server, depending on the goal of your migration, choose one of the following approaches:

  • If your destination server is being deployed on the same domain, see Migrate the RD Virtualization Host server to the same domain.

  • If your destination server is being deployed on a different domain, see Migrate the RD Virtualization Host server to a different domain.

After the migration of the destination RD Virtualization Host server to the appropriate domain, see Complete the migration of the RD Virtualization Host server.

Note

This topic assumes that the virtual machines are located on the RD Virtualization Host server and that the user is using Hyper-V to manage them. You can use Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) for this migration if your deployment uses it to manage virtual machines.

Export the virtual machines to the destination server

  • Add the destination RD Virtualization Host server to the same domain as the source server.

  • Export the virtual machines to the destination RD Virtualization Host server.

  • Delete the virtual machines from the source RD Virtualization Host server.

First, add the destination RD Virtualization Host server to the same domain as the source server by using the process specified by your systems administrator.

Next, export the virtual machines to the destination RD Virtualization Host server.

To export the virtual machines to the destination RD Virtualization Host server

  1. On the source server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Hyper-V Manager.

  2. In Hyper-V Manager, in the console tree, double-click the node for the source server.

  3. Right-click the first virtual machine that you want to export (refer to the list on the data worksheet).

  4. Click Export, specify the location on the destination server where you will store the virtual machine, and then click OK.

  5. Follow steps 1–4 until you have exported all the virtual machines on the list.

Next, delete the virtual machines from the source RD Virtualization Host server.

To delete the virtual machines from the source RD Virtualization Host server

  1. On the source server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Hyper-V Manager.

  2. Click the Roles node, click Hyper-V, click Hyper-V Manager, and then click the node for the source server.

  3. Right-click the first virtual machine that you want to delete (refer to the list on the data worksheet).

  4. Click Delete, and then click OK.

  5. Follow steps 1–4 until you have deleted all the virtual machines on the list.

Migrate the RD Virtualization Host server to the same domain

  • Remove the source RD Virtualization Host server from the RD Connection Broker server.

  • Remove the source RD Virtualization Host server from the domain.

First, remove the source RD Virtualization Host server from the RD Connection Broker server.

To remove the source RD Virtualization Host server from the RD Connection Broker server

  1. Log on to the RD Connection Broker server as a member of the local Administrators group.

  2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, point to Remote Desktop Services, and then click Remote Desktop Connection Manager.

  3. In the console tree, click RD Virtualization Host servers.

  4. In RD Virtualization Host servers in the center pane, right-click the source RD Virtualization Host server, and then click Remove Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Server.

Next, remove the source RD Virtualization Host server from the domain by using the process specified by your systems administrator.

Migrate the RD Virtualization Host server to a different domain

  • Remove the destination RD Virtualization Host server from the RD Connection Broker server.

  • Remove the destination RD Virtualization Host server from the domain.

  • Add the destination server to the destination domain.

First, remove the destination RD Virtualization Host server from the RD Connection Broker server.

  4. In RD Virtualization Host servers in the center pane, right-click the temporary name of the destination RD Virtualization Host server, and then click Remove Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Server.

Next, remove the destination RD Virtualization Host server from the domain by using the process specified by your systems administrator.

Next, add the destination RD Virtualization Host server to the destination domain.

Complete the migration of the RD Virtualization Host server

  • Rename the destination server to the name of the source server.

  • Import the virtual machines into Hyper-V on the destination RD Virtualization Host server.

  • Add the destination RD Virtualization Host server to the RD Connection Broker server.

First, rename the destination server to the name of the source server.

To rename the destination server to the name of the source server

  • Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

  • On the Computer Name tab, select Change. In the Computer name box, type the computer name from the data worksheet, click OK, and then restart the computer.

Next, import the virtual machines into Hyper-V on the destination RD Virtualization Host server.

To import the virtual machines into Hyper-V on the destination RD Virtualization Host server

  1. On the destination server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Hyper-V Manager.
