To enable the streaming of content to clients over networks (either an intranet or the Internet), the Windows Media Services service must be running on the Windows Media server.

Resolve

Restore or correct Windows Media server settings in the namespace

To resolve this issue, do one of the following:

  • Restore Windows Media server settings from ServerNamespace.bak.
  • Correct errors in ServerNamespace.xml.

Restore Windows Media server settings from ServerNamespace.bak

Before changing Windows Media server properties, either by changing settings in Windows Media Services or by changing the namespace, you should create a backup copy of ServerNamespace.xml so that you can restore the Windows Media server settings if an error occurs in the namespace. To create a backup copy of ServerNamespace.xml, create a copy of the ServerNamespace.xml file and rename the copy to ServerNamespace.bak. If you have a backup copy of this file, you can perform the following procedure to restore the Windows Media server settings.

To perform this procedure, you must have membership in the local Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To restore the default Windows Media server settings:

  1. Stop the Windows Media Services service. To stop the Windows Media Services service, click Start, point to Services, click Windows Media Services, and then, on the Action menu, click Stop.
  2. In %SystemRoot%\System32\Windows Media\Server, delete the ServerNamespace.xml file.
  3. Rename ServerNamespace.bak to ServerNamespace.xml.
  4. Start the Windows Media Services service. To start the Windows Media Services service, click Start, point to Services, click Windows Media Services, and then, on the Action menu, click Start.

Correct errors in ServerNamespace.xml

To perform this procedure, you must have membership in the local Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To correct errors in ServerNamespace.xml:

  1. Stop the Windows Media Services service. To stop the Windows Media Services service, click Start, point to Services, click Windows Media Services, and then, on the Action menu, click Stop.
  2. In %SystemRoot%\System32\Windows Media\Server, open the ServerNamespace.xml file in a text editor such as Notepad and correct the error at the location indicated by the event log message.
  3. Start the Windows Media Services service. To start the Windows Media Services service, click Start, point to Services, click Windows Media Services, and then, on the Action menu, click Start.

Verify

To verify that the Windows Media Services service is running:

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the list of services, verify that the Status for Windows Media Services is Started.
