Import of a Hyper-V virtual machine in Windows Server 2008 + KB950050 without data to Windows Server 2008 R2 fails

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

This article describes a known issue that occurs when importing an exported virtual machine without data from Hyper-V Manager in Windows Server 2008 + KB950050 (Hyper-V V1 RTM) to Hyper-V Manager in Windows Server 2008 R2. This imports fails.

This article applies to the following operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Whenever you import a virtual machine that was exported with configuration only (which is exporting a virtual machine without any data) followed by the deletion of the original virtual machine, the import fails with the follow error message:

A server error occurred while attempting to import the virtual machine.

Cause

During the import, when you delete the original virtual machine from the source location, all of the snapshots (.avhd files) are merged. When the snapshots are merged, the virtual machine without data is corrupted. However, the exported configuration expects that all of the .avhd files are still available. As a result, when the import occurs, Hyper-V fails to find the .avhd files and the import fails.

Workaround

There is no workaround available at this time.
