Create or join a team
Microsoft Teams for Education includes four types of teams for educators:
- Class teams: For educators and learners to collaborate on group projects, assignments, and more
- Staff team: For staff leaders and members to collaborate on school administration and development
- PLC teams: For educators to collaborate within a professional learning community
- Other teams: For school clubs, sports teams, or groups of learners and school staff with common interests or projects
Tip
Before manually creating a class team, check with your IT department and ask if School Data Sync can help create the team.
Create a team
- Select the Join or create a team button in the upper-right corner of the Teams app.
- Select Create team and choose the type of team you want to create.
- Select Use this template.

Add members to a team
Team members should be added immediately after creating the team.
- Enter the names of faculty or learners. Type a name to choose a group, distribution list, or person at the school.
- Repeat for all new members.
When you're adding team members, the team owner can immediately designate additional owners for the team:
For staff teams:
- Designate administrators as owners
- Leave the faculty they supervise as members
For class teams:
- Leave learners as members
- Designate educators or administrators who will help manage the team as owners
Invite members to a team
Instead of typing each member’s name one by one, learners and staff members can join the team themselves using a team code.
- Select the three dots by the name of the team.
- Choose Manage Team.
- Select Settings.
- In the settings, select Team code, then select Generate.
- Copy and email the team code to learners and educators or display it on a projector for everyone to access.
Join a team with a code
To join a team with a code:
- Go to Join or create a team.
- Select Join team.
- Enter the code.
