The Litera Search Copilot connector is a legal professional's digital assistant for navigating the complex landscape of legal intelligence. The plugin offers advanced features that expose legal intelligence searching and matter data retrieval, helping to streamline legal drafting, business development, and workflow tasks. As a Copilot plugin, the connector provides quick access to relevant cases, related parties, and legal content in Microsoft Copilot-enabled UIs, making the plugin a go-to tool for legal insights and information management.

Prerequisites

  • Users can leverage the Litera Search connector only if they have a Lattice user account. Since Lattice is an enterprise product, users must be authenticated against their firm's Entra tenant. As such, the user's firm must purchase Litera Lattice and subsequently supply Litera with its Entra Tenant ID. (For Microsoft Copilot Plugin Certification Testing, please provide the appropriate Microsoft Entra Tenant ID.) Litera will then give the firm the API key needed to create a connection to the Copilot plugin.

How to get credentials

  1. See the Prerequisites section above for the prerequisite to obtaining credentials.
  2. The user must attempt to log into the Lattice application using their appropriate Microsoft Entra credentials.
  3. During the login process, the user will be prompted to grant consent to use their credentials. Upon granting consent, they will have access to both Litera Lattice and the Litera Search plugin.

Get started with your connector

Provide users with a step-by-step process for getting started with your connector. This is where you should highlight common use cases, such as your expected popular triggers and actions, and how they can help in automation scenarios. Include images where possible.

The Litera Search connector extends Litera Lattice search functionality to the domains of the Microsoft Power Platform and Microsoft Copilot. Lattice users can issue the same natural language matter searches that they would execute in the Lattice UI. They can further drill down to particular matters to retrieve both matter narratives and detail. Future versions of the connector will offer additional functionality.

The connector does not expose any triggers, but currently supports the following actions:

GetMatterList:

Allows the user to search for legal matters. The action returns a list of matter names and matter IDs that satisfy the specified user natural language request for matters.

GetMatterNarrative:

Allows the user to retrieve a matter narrative -- that is, the descriptive overview -- for the specified matter. Requires a client-matter number, for example "9902-20025". Returns the narrative text as a JSON string.

GetMatterDetail:

Allows the user to retrieve the details of a matter, including matter type, client, open/close dates, responsible attorney, and office, for the specified matter. Requires a client-matter number, for example "9902-20025". Returns the matter detail as a JSON string.

Known issues and limitations

Search criteria are limited to those supported by Litera Lattice:

  • Client Matter Number
  • Matter Type (hierarchical)
  • Industry (hierarchical)
  • Matter Practice Group
  • Matter Location
  • Client
  • Open Date
  • Close Date
  • Timekeeper
  • Responsible Attorney
  • Billing Attorney
  • Matter Office
  • Matter Kind (open/closed)
  • Total Hours (secured)
  • Total Billing (secured)
  • Adjudicator (judge name)
  • Forum

For any other criteria, we run a semantic search against matter narrative to stack-rank for relevance.

Common errors and remedies

The following error codes may be returned:

  • 401/403 - The user is not authorized to use this action. To resolve this error, follow the instructions in both the "Prerequisites" and "How to get credentials" sections above.

FAQ

What types of search can I execute?

You can execute any of the searches that you can execute in Litera Lattice. Search criteria are limited to those supported by Lattice. See the "Known issues and limitations" section above for more information.

What are some sample searches?

Show me a list of matters related to entertainment opened last year. Show me a list of M&A matters from New York. Retrieve a list of commercial litigation matters for Pfizer. Show me a list of matters related to the agriculture industry. Show me matters related to the tech industry for Microsoft corporation. List matters with adjudicator George Harper. Show me matters in Boston related to real estate. List all Costco matters. Display matters related to tax law. Show me matters related to the goods industry. Show me matters opened in July 2023.

How can I use the connector functionality in Microsoft Copilot?

You will need to add Litera Search as a Copilot plugin. In Microsoft Teams, for example, open your Copilot window and click on the plugins icon. Click "More Plugins" and find/select Litera Search. Once the plugin appears in the list of your installed plugins, turn it on. You can then start issuing searches and requests for narratives and details.

How do I ask for narratives in Microsoft Copilot?

For narratives, request something like the following: "Show me the narrative for matter [client-matter number]", where [client-matter number] is the client-matter number of the narrative that you want to retrieve. Typically, the matter search results will include the client-matter number for each matter in the resultset.

How do I ask for detail in Microsoft Copilot?

For narratives, request something like the following: "Show me the detail for matter [client-matter number]", where [client-matter number] is the client-matter number of the narrative that you want to retrieve. Typically, the matter search results will include the client-matter number for each matter in the resultset.

What detail is returned by a request for detail?

The following fields are currently returned by a request for matter detail: matter type, client, open/close dates, responsible attorney, and office. We will be expanding the set of fields returned in future versions of the connector.
