Networking
The networking functions enable communication between applications on different computers on a network. You can also create and manage access to shared resources, such as directories and network printers, on computers in the network.
Windows provides support for a variety of industry standards, such as Windows Sockets, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). It also provides support for applications to interact with Internet protocols such as HTTP, FTP, and Gopher. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a standard by which Internet names are translated to their corresponding IP addresses.
Windows also supports interfaces that are built on the lower-level networking interfaces. Message Queuing is a platform for developing distributed applications. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) transfers files between a client and a server. UPnP is a framework that enables dynamic networking of intelligent appliances, wireless devices, and PCs.
