Commerce Server Enterprise Deployment Network Connectivity Diagram

This topic illustrates how various Commerce Server deployments are networked to constitute an enterprise deployment. The Commerce Server enterprise network consists of five virtual local area networks (VLANs) and three domains:

  • Web Domain

  • Data and Staging Domain

  • Development/Test/Business Domain

The network connectivity of these three domains is shown in the following figure.

The production environment is spread across two domains, the Web domain and the Data/Staging domain. The Data/Staging domain houses the production data tier and the staging environment or staging tier. The third domain, the Development/Test/Business domain, resides in its own VLAN.

Web Domain

All Web servers are joined to the Web domain controller, domain controller 1. Within the Web domain there are three VLANs:

  • VLAN 1 connects the Web servers to the load balancer which connects through the network switch/firewall to the Internet. Users access the Web servers through this connection.

  • VLAN 2 connects the Web servers on the second network adapter to the network switch and firewall which connects to VLAN 3.

  • VLAN 3 connects the domain controller 1 to the network switch and firewall.

A one-way trust is established from the Web tier domain controller 1 to the data tier data/staging domain controller, domain controller 2. Through this trust, the Web servers on VLAN2 can communicate with the servers in VLAN 4.

Data and Staging Domain

The production data tier and staging environment are present together in the data and staging domain and VLAN 4.

The production data tier consists of the following components:

  • Clustered database servers, SQL Node 1 and SQL Node 2

  • Management server

  • Data Warehouse and analysis server

  • Business management server with Direct Mailer Service (Websvc/DM in the diagram)

  • BizTalk Server database (BTS DB)

  • BizTalk Server with Commerce Server adapters (BTS LOB)

The Staging tier consists of the following components:

  • Staging database server (Staging SQL Server)

  • Staging business management server

  • Domain Controller 2

All these components connect to the network switch and form VLAN 4. Data is staged from the staging tier to the production environment.

Development/Test/Business Domain

The development/test/business domain forms VLAN 5. The following components are present in this domain:

  • Test database (SQL) server

  • Test business management server

  • Test BizTalk server with Commerce Server adapters

  • Test domain controller (domain controller 3)

A one-way trust is established from the Development/Test/Business domain controller to domain controller 2 within the data/staging domain. Through this trust, data can be staged from the development/test/business domain to the staging tier.
