Configuring Metabase Properties in IIS Manager

The most frequently used configuration properties can be accessed in the IIS user interface (IIS Manager). All other properties can be accessed through the programmatic methods listed in Comparison of IIS Administration Features.

The following table contains a list of some of the IIS properties that can be changed, and their location, in IIS Manager. For instructions on how to open the IIS UI, see Using the User Interface to Configure IIS.

In the Properties pages for any site or virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Select the check boxes for the access permissions you want to allow, and clear the check boxes for the permissions you want to deny.

AccessSSLFlags

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Directory Security tab.

  2. In the Secure Communications box, once a server certificate is installed, click Edit.

  3. Select the check boxes for the access permissions you want to allow, and clear the check boxes for the permissions you want to deny.

AllowAnonymous

In the Properties pages for any FTP site

  1. Click the Security Accounts tab.

  2. Select the Allow anonymous connections check box.

AllowKeepAlive

In the Properties pages for any Web site

  1. Click the Web Site tab.

  2. Select the Enable HTTP Keep-Alives or HTTP Keep-Alives Enabled check box.

AnonymousOnly

In the Properties pages for any FTP site

  1. Click the Security Accounts tab.

  2. Select the Allow only anonymous connections check box.

AnonymousUserName

In the Properties pages for any FTP site

  1. Click the Security Accounts tab.

  2. Type the user account name into the Username box. Make sure the password matches the user account.

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Directory Security tab.

  2. Under Anonymous access and authentication control, click Edit.

  3. Type the user account name into the User name box. Verify that the password matches the user account.

AnonymousUserPass

In the Properties pages for any FTP site

  1. Click the Security Accounts tab.

  2. Type the user account password into the Password box. Verify that the password matches the user account.

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Directory Security tab.

  2. In the Anonymous access and authentication control box, click Edit.

  3. Type the user account password into the Password box. Verify that the password matches the user account.

AppAllowClientDebug

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. In the Application Settings box, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Debugging tab.

  4. Select the Enable ASP client-side script debugging check box.

AppAllowDebugging

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Debugging tab.

  4. Select the Enable ASP server-side script debugging check box.

AppFriendlyName

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, type the friendly name of the application in the Application name box. An application must be created for the box to be active.

AppIsolated

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, select the desired isolation level from the Application Protection drop down list. An application must be created for the drop down list to be active.

AspAllowSessionState

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Options tab.

  4. Select the Enable session state check box.

AspBufferingOn

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Options tab.

  4. Select the Enable buffering check box.

AspEnableParentPaths

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Options tab.

  4. Select the Enable parent paths check box.

AspScriptEngineCacheMax

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Cache Options tab.

  4. Enter the maximum number of script engines you want cached in the Number of script engines cached box.

IIS 4.0, 5.0, 5.1: This property is not configurable through the UI.

AspScriptErrorMessage

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Debugging tab.

  4. Under Script Error Messages, type your error message in the Send text error messages to client box. The radio button must be selected to make this box active.

AspScriptErrorSentToBrowser

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Debugging tab.

  4. Under Script Error Messages, select the Send detailed ASP error messages to client box.

AspScriptLanguage

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Options tab.

  4. Type the name of the default script language in the Default ASP language box.

AspScriptTimeout

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Options tab.

  4. Type the length of time (in seconds) for an ASP script to time out in the ASP Script timeout box.

AspSessionTimeout

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Options tab.

  4. Type the length of time (in minutes) for an ASP session to time out in the Session timeout box. The Enable session state check box must be selected.

AuthFlags

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Directory Security tab.

  2. Under Anonymous access and authentication control, click Edit.

  3. Under Authenticated Access, Select the check boxes for the access permissions you want to allow, and clear the check boxes for the permissions you want to deny.

CacheISAPI

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Under Application Settings, click Configuration. An application must be created for the button to be active.

  3. Click the Mappings tab.

  4. Select the Cache ISAPI Applications check box.

ConnectionTimeout

In the Properties pages for any Web site or FTP site

  1. Click the Web Site or FTP Site tab.

  2. Under Connection, enter the length of time (in seconds) to hold connections open in the Connection Timeout box.

ContentIndexed

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Home Directory or Virtual Directory tab.

  2. Select the Index this resource check box.

DirBrowseFlags

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Documents tab.

  2. Under Enable Document Footer, type the name of the file that you want displayed as a document footer in the box. Enable Document Footer must be selected to make this box active.

DontLog

In the Properties pages for any FTP site

  1. Click the Home Directory tab.

  2. Under FTP Site Directory, clear the Log visits check box.

EnableDocFooter

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the Documents tab.

  2. Select the Enable Document Footer check box.

ExitMessage

In the Properties pages for any FTP site

  1. Click the Messages tab.

  2. Type the message that you want displayed to FTP clients when they log out in the Exit box.

GreetingMessage

In the Properties pages for any FTP site

  1. Click the Messages tab.

  2. Type the message that you want displayed to FTP clients in the Welcome box.

HttpCustomHeaders

In the Properties pages for any Web site or Web virtual directory

  1. Click the HTTP Headers tab.

  2. Under Custom HTTP Headers, click Add to add a header. To edit or remove a header, highlight a header, in the list, and then click Edit or Remove.

WebSvcExtRestrictionList

In IIS Manager

  1. Click the local computer tree item.

  2. Click the Web Service Extensions tree item.

  3. In the right pane, you can select service extensions to Allow or Prohibit them, or configure their Properties. There are links below to add new extensions or enable them for specific applications.
