Prerequisites for Using the Best Practices Analyzer Tool
Before you install the Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server, you must have the necessary permissions and meet the system requirements. You can install and run the tool from either a client computer where Team Explorer is installed or a server where Team Foundation Server is installed. For optimal results in a dual-server deployment, you should run the tool from the application-tier server.
Permissions
To install the tool, you must be a member of the Administrators security group on the computer where you will install the tool.
To perform a scan and collect the most information about your deployment, you should have the following permissions:
When you log on to the computer where you will run the tool, you must use an account that is a member of the Administrators security group not only on the local computer but also the computers that you want to scan.
You need these permissions to call the providers of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and to access the registry and the metabase for Internet Information Services (IIS).
In dual-server or distributed deployments, you need permissions to read WMI data, and the WMI traffic port must be open on the remote servers. In dual-server or distributed environments, SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services, or SharePoint Products and Technologies is installed on a different computer from the application-tier server. Note
For computers that are running Windows Server 2008, you might need to configure additional settings to handle remote connections under User Access Control (UAC). For more information, see the Microsoft Web site.
You must have read/write permissions to the directories from which the tool runs (the installation directory) and to which the tool writes data. For more information about the directories to which the tool writes data, see Reports that the Best Practices Analyzer Tool Generates.
If any of the above conditions are not met, the tool might not apply all rules to the remote servers in the deployment, and the reports might contain "Access not available" messages. For more information, see Rule Checking Performed by the Best Practices Analyzer Tool and Access is not available.

The Best Practices Analyzer tool for Team Foundation Server requires the following system requirements to be met on any computer that you use to perform a scan:
Before you install the tool, you must install the following components:
.NET Framework 2.0. For more information, see .NET Framework or Internet Information Services (IIS) is not installed or not running.
Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 (on Windows Server 2003) or IIS 7.0 (on Windows Server 2008). You must have this component to access the IIS metabase from a separate computer. For more information, see .NET Framework or Internet Information Services (IIS) is not installed or not running.
Windows PowerShell 1.0. For Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0, obtain the download from the Microsoft Download Center. For Windows Server 2008 and IIS 7.0, see How to: Enable Windows PowerShell.
Team Explorer, when the tool is installed on a client computer.
Before you scan a deployment, you must ensure that the following requirements are met:
The computer on which the tool will run must have at least 256 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM).
The computer on which the tool will run must have at least 2 MB of disk space for each computer that you will scan.
