How to: Enable Windows Azure Tools

Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio extend Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 to help you create, configure, build, debug, run, and package scalable Web applications and services on Windows Azure. (The applications must target ASP.NET 3.5.)

You can download the Windows Azure Tools from the New Project dialog box.

Note

Your computer might show different names or locations for some of the Visual Studio user interface elements in the following instructions. The Visual Studio edition that you have and the settings that you use determine these elements. For more information, see Visual Studio Settings.

To enable Windows Azure Tools

  1. On the File menu, click New and then click Project.

  2. Under Installed Templates, expand the node for either Visual Basic or C#, and then click Cloud.

  3. In the middle pane, select Enable Windows Azure Tools, and then click OK.

Visual Studio creates a cloud services project and opens an informational page in the document area.

    Note

To install the Windows Azure Tools, you must have Internet Information Services 7.0 and the ASP.NET Application Development components installed. If these components are not installed, Windows Azure Tools Setup will prompt you to install them.

  4. Click Download Windows Azure Tools.

  5. On the download page, download the Windows Azure Tools according to the instructions.
