DRM Terminology Definitions (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

1/5/2010

When you work with Microsoft Windows Media Connect (WMC) or with Microsoft Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10 for Network Devices, there are several important terms that you should understand. The following table defines some of these important terms.

  • Authorization
The process whereby the user authorizes the device by using the WMC user interface (UI). When the user has authorized the device, the device can then see the content list, and can play unprotected content.

For more information about the process of authorization, see the documentation for the Media Query Engine in Authorization and Registration.

  • Data transfer
Data transfer between WMC and a networked media device is performed after policy rights have been sent by WMC and have been enforced by the networked media device. The control protocol handles the data transfer procedure; therefore, both the request message and the response message must be specifically defined for the control protocol and the content type.
  • Proximity detection
Proximity detection measures the amount of latency between a WMC server and a networked media device. If the amount of latency is short enough, then the networked media device is considered to be near the transmitter. The transmitter will not send any content to a networked media device unless the networked media device is near the transmitter. This restriction confines the distribution of protected content to an area that is within the home network.
  • Receiving a Policy
The process of a policy being sent to a registered or a revalidated networked media device when it requests content from WMC.
  • Registration
The process of registering a networked media device with the server by using a certificate and serial number. This step allows the networked media device to play protected content.

For more information about on the process of registration, see the documentation for the Media Query Engine in Authorization and Registration.
