How to Develop a VoIP Phone (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)
1/5/2010
This topic provides an outline to follow when learning how to develop a Voice over IP (VoIP) phone using the VoIP technology included with Windows Embedded CE.
Learning and development processes vary by individual; you do not need to rigidly follow the steps presented here. The steps are in an order that is suitable for many people, but will not be suitable for all. You should progress in a way that makes the most sense for your particular needs.
Similarly, although each step is only listed once, you may need to repeat some steps. For example, in your development process you will probably customize, debug, and test many times, and think about security during each iteration.
Assumptions
This topic assumes that you have basic Windows Embedded CE knowledge. It does not assume that you have general telephony or VoIP knowledge, or that you are familiar with the VoIP functionality in Windows Embedded CE. If you already understand some of these areas, you can follow the steps that focus on the areas you do not yet know.
For example, if you already understand how VoIP devices operate but have not worked with VoIP in Windows Embedded CE, you might skip the Step 1 because it provides background information about general VoIP technologies and protocols.
Steps
Step | Topic |
---|---|
1. Understand general VoIP technology and communication protocols. |
|
2. Experiment with the phone solution that the Windows Embedded CE IP Phone design template provides to see what it offers, before you learn about how it is implemented. |
|
3. Learn about the overall organization of the Windows Embedded CE VoIP phone solution. |
|
4. Understand how the VoIP phone solution can be customized. |
|
5. Learn details about specific ways to customize the VoIP phone solution. |
|
6. Understand how to use included source code to better understand and customize the VoIP phone solution. |
|
7. Throughout the development process, consider security implications of your customizations and of a VoIP phone device in general. |
|
8. Understand debugging and testing steps for VoIP phone devices. |
