Installation (Compact 7)

Now that you have ensured that your computer meets all of the necessary requirements, begin the installation of Windows Embedded Compact 7.
To install Windows Embedded Compact 7, insert the disks that you purchased or go to the Download Windows Embedded Compact 7 website to install the 180-day trial. After you start the installer, proceed through the following steps.
Note
If you registered for the trial version, a confirmation email that contains the trial product key is sent to the email address that you provided during registration.
The installation instructions that follow assume that you are installing the trial version. The speed of the installation process depends on your internet connection and the number of Windows Embedded Compact 7 components you select to install, but be aware that the installation can take several hours.
Important
Do not let your computer restart, hibernate, or enter sleep mode while you install Windows Embedded Compact 7. For more information about known installation issues, see Release Notes for Windows Embedded Compact 7 with Update 3.
To install Windows Embedded Compact 7
After you start the Windows Embedded Compact 7 installer, on the End-User License Agreement page, review the terms and conditions. If you agree, click I agree to the terms and conditions, and then click Next.
On the Product Key page, enter the product key that was displayed after you registered for the free trial (the product key was also emailed to you), and then click Next.
If you want to do a full installation, click Full Install. However, for this guide, we recommend that you click Custom Install so that you can select only the components you need. The rest of these instructions assume that you chose to do a custom installation.
The default installation directory is C:\WINCE700. If you want to change the installation directory, click Change to browse to a different directory.
Important
The installation directory path must not contain spaces.
Click Next. On the Customize Installation page, in the left panel under Initial Options, you will see the components that you can install:

Compact Test Kit
Windows Embedded Silverlight Tools

Shared Source
Note
Shared Source is private Windows Embedded Compact source code. We recommend that you install it, if possible, because it includes 100% of the kernel source code and can be extremely useful during debugging. The Shared Source is not available in the trial version of Windows Embedded Compact, but you can obtain it through the Windows Embedded Compact & CE Shared Source Program.

Select the components that you want to install. The minimum components that you need for this guide are Platform Builder and the x86 architecture. If you install only Platform Builder and the x86 architecture, the total estimated disk space required on your development computer is about 11.7 GB. You may select other items based on your anticipated needs. If you choose to install an architecture, you will be able to design an OS for a device based on that architecture. You will also get the Platform Builder sample BSPs for that architecture. For a list of sample BSPs, see Board Support Package (BSP).
Important
Be careful to select only the architectures that you need, because architectures are the largest contributors to installation size. Each architecture that you select requires anywhere between 9 and 12 GB of disk space on your development computer.
After you select the options that you want to install, click Next.
In the Install Offline Layout page, select whether you want an offline layout. When you use an offline layout, the product installation content is copied to a local or network location before the installation is started. Use this option if, after you download the content, you want to be able to install Windows Embedded Compact 7 without the use of internet connectivity. When you choose the offline layout, the total estimated disk space that is needed increases by about 2 GB per architecture. By default, this option is not selected. (The rest of these instructions assume that you are not using an offline layout.) Click Next.
In the Ready to Proceed page, review the list of components that you are about to install. Note that for each architecture that you selected, several components (common code, updates, support for different build types, and so on) are required; you cannot choose components on a more granular level. If you want to choose different architectures, click Back. Otherwise, click Install.
If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Yes.
When the Installation Source File dialog box appears, select Allow downloading for all files, and then click Download. (If you do not select Allow downloading for all files, then the installer stops after it acquires each component, and you must click Download to install the next component.) The Installing Windows Embedded Compact 7 window displays the installation progress for each component.
After the selected components are installed, you have the opportunity to register for and install Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU), which is an add-in to Visual Studio. WEDU can automatically check for updates to Windows Embedded Compact 7 and notify you of available downloads. For more information about WEDU, see Windows Embedded Compact 7 Development Update. After installation is complete, you will set up a virtual device.
