Windows Embedded Compact 7 Multimedia Features
3/12/2014
Windows Embedded Compact 7 provides a high-performance platform for developers to create powerful, connected devices that take advantage of the latest hardware platforms, including support for the ARM7 processor, hardware graphics acceleration, and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support. Familiar tools, such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Silverlight, and Microsoft Expression Blend, provide you with the ability to design and deliver intuitive UI frameworks and connected user experiences.
Note
If you use Silverlight to develop devices, you can easily extend and customize device UIs by using the extensive features of Silverlight for Windows Embedded.
Compact 7 supports the development of dynamic browsing experiences, such as:
- An updated Windows Internet Explorer 7 browsing engine.
- Desktop browsing that supports using tabs, panning, and zooming for navigation, and multitouch capabilities.
- Access to multimedia content that is compatible with Adobe Flash 10.1.
You can create touch interaction experiences for devices, such as support for:
- Touch input.
- Multitouch browser integration for mobile device experiences.
- Custom user gestures.
You can build connected experiences so that devices can connect to, display, and play simple to complex media by using such features as:
- Microsoft DirectShow, which uses updated MPEG-4, HTTP, and high-definition support to provide extensive playback capabilities that uses customizable filters for creating devices with Compact 7.
- A new Windows Embedded Compact 7 Media Library that provides simplified media management to easily acquire, organize, manage, and retrieve media content.
- A flexible plug-in architecture that supports non-Microsoft content.
Your devices can connect easily to the Windows 7 operating system, and take advantage of these features:
- Simplified device management through integration with Windows Device Stage.
- Transfer of user data and media by using Windows 7 with Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) support.
- The Play To feature, which lets you move music, video, and photos to and from your personal computer running Windows 7.
Compact 7 also works with Digital Living Network Alliance, or DLNA Certified®, devices. For more information, see Windows Embedded Compact 7 and the DLNA Standard.
Note
Using Compact 7 does not guarantee a compatibility solution outside of DLNA Certified®. To certify any devices built by using Compact 7, your company must first join DLNA, and then submit your devices to testing to obtain DLNA certification.
Compact 7 features include:
- Microsoft DirectShow, which uses updated MPEG-4, HTTP, and high-definition support to provide extensive playback capabilities that uses customizable filters for creating devices with Compact 7.
- A new Media Library that provides simplified media management to easily acquire, organize, manage, and retrieve media content.
- The Media Player, which can play local and streaming multimedia files, both on a specific device and across networks.
The following figure shows the architecture and interoperability that Compact 7 provides.
