Format

SNMP uses three separate formats to convey management information:

  • Structure of Management Information (SMI). SMI contains a set of rules that outline how to create a MIB and how to define managed objects that are accessed through the SNMP protocol. SMI is defined in RFC 1155, RFC 1212, and RFC 1215.
  • Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1). ASN.1 defines the format of SNMP messages and managed objects (MIB modules) by using an unambiguous data description format that is human as well as machine readable.
  • Basic Encoding Rules (BER). BER is used to encode SNMP into a format that is suitable for transmission across a network.
